Mission Statement

St John’s C of E Combined School exists in the community to provide all round excellence in education, developing and       nurturing the intellectual, artistic, social, spiritual and physical resources of each child in a Christian context, enabling all pupils to achieve their full potential in a caring environment.

 Aims

Please note that these are not listed in any particular order of importance.

To encourage pupils to develop lively, enquiring minds with a clear ability to listen attentively, question keenly, argue rationally and act honestly.

To develop pupil’s power of observation, logical thought and communication, especially the capacity to use language and number in a way appropriate to each situation.

To equip pupils with the skills, knowledge and attitudes which will help them to live adult lives as self-respecting, self motivated and competent individuals, able to make informed and reasoned choices for themselves, having regard to the needs of others.

To enable pupils to learn and appreciate the scale and scope of human achievement, past and present in the arts, sciences and technology and to encourage their own individual creative talents to be expressed.

To encourage the development of moral and spiritual values and the will to base life and behaviour upon them; of respect and understanding towards other races, religions and cultures.

 Ofsted Report

In February 2005 St John’s underwent it’s third Ofsted Inspection.

The Inspectors final report concluded that:

St John’s Combined School is a very effective school that enables pupils to achieve very well and attain high standards.

What makes this school very effective is the good leadership and management, the good quality of education, pupils’ very strong desire to learn and very strong support and contribution from parents, the church and wider community. The school provides very good value for money.

The school’s main strengths and weaknesses are:

Pupils’ attainment across all subjects is at least above national expectations by age 11.
The good leadership and management and the good teaching, helps all pupils to achieve very well.
Pupils’ attitudes, behaviour and personal development are very good with some excellent features.
Parents contribute very well to their children’s education.
The curriculum is relevant and interesting and teachers make very good links between subjects.
Curricular enrichment and links with other schools and the community are very good.
School self-evaluation is not sufficiently critical.
Pupils’ and parents’ views are not sought and acted upon regularly enough.

The school has made good overall improvements since its last inspection. Already high standards in English, Mathematics and Science have improved. Standards in a number of other subjects are also better than they were. The curriculum has improved and that for information and communication technology (ICT) has improved very well.
